Discussion about U.S. Elections
Discussion about U.S. Elections
In recognition of this electoral year, the American Information Center’s discussion club dedicated its bi-weekly discussion on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, to the American political and electoral system. Mr. David Whiting, the Embassy’s Political counselor, led the discussion.
Mr. Whiting explained the tripartite American political system: federal government, state governments, and local governments (counties, districts, cities, etc.). Mr. Whiting then explained how the balance of power works between the executive (the President and his cabinet), the legislative (both houses of Congress) and the judicial (Supreme Court) branches of government.
Following his presentation, he answered several questions about the balance of power, elections, and the role of the candidates, among others.
As a reminder, the American Information Center organizes a discussion club twice each month on Wednesday. The discussions are in English an may be on general or timely topics.
