Medical Care in Senegal

Several hospitals and clinics in the capital, Dakar, can treat major and minor injuries and illnesses.  Public hospitals do not meet U.S. standards.  Medical facilities outside Dakar are limited.  All medical providers require cash payment, many before treatment.  In an emergency, some facilities will admit a patient without prior payment, but will require full cash payment before releasing the patient from the hospital.

Senegal does not have adequate inpatient psychiatric care and has very limited office-based psychiatry.

French medications are far more readily available in Senegal than American drugs, and drugs in stock are often listed under the French trade name.  Medications may be obtained at pharmacies throughout Dakar and in other areas frequented by tourists, and are usually less expensive than in the U.S.

The Consular Section has compiled the following list of medical providers with assistance from the American Embassy Medical Unit.  The American Embassy assumes no responsibility for the professional ability or integrity of the individuals listed below.
