79th Anniversary of the Birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"Martin Luther King day" takes place every year on the third Monday of January to commemorate the birth of the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Non-violent civil rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. played a major role in the emancipation of African-Americans and the awareness of segregational injustice in the United States. "I have a Dream," the title of his speech calling for brotherhood between blacks and whites has become a new anthem for solidarity and hope of mutual understanding between all communities.
The Embassy of the United States in Senegal, in partnership with the city of Dakar, carried out the final deliberation of a competition for building a public monument to honor the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This work will be erected on Martin Luther King Boulevard. The winner of this competition is the group MAK, composed of the architect Annie Jouga, the designer Madeleine Bombote and the sculptor Gabriel Kemzo Malou.
