We also maintain a collection of reference books on American life, politics, economics, literature and all other aspects of American society including works on African-Americans. We also subscribe to 30 magazines both popular titles such as Time and Newsweek, and scholarly journals such as African Affairs and the Economist. But all of the books and magazines are just a tiny part of the information available at the AIC.

We even provide printed material you can take with you such as Islam in America, An Introduction to American Literature, of maps of the United States. Although most of our material is in English and French we do have several publications in Arabic (we even can show you the free products from our Arabic web site at http://usinfo.state.gov/ar.) Our librarians also produce Internet guides or “webliographies”. These are lists of recommended web sites on various subjects.
Our most recent electronic resource is already proving to be most popular. We are pleased to announce that we have introduced the “Academic Elite” database of over 1100 magazines and journals. This database offers the latest articles on medicine, economics, politics, literature, sociology, and just about any other subject you can name. This week visitors to the IRC were researching articles on different subjects for example the psychological effects of terrorism, the works of Hawthorne and Beecher, and the life of Martin Luther King, the poetry of Toni Morrison and how to teach multiculturism. After selecting the articles you can email the article to your own email account – it’s easy, quick and absolutely free! In fact all of the services are free of cost. When you enter the comfortable and air conditioned IRC you are entering the library of tomorrow that is here in Senegal today. We here at the American Embassy welcome anyone who is seeking information on the United States. We welcome all students, teachers, librarians, politicians, businessmen, scientists and anyone else seeking information on the United States.

The AIC is housed outside of the embassy compound, more precisely on the 6th floor of the Kléber Building II, which also shelters the public affairs section of the embassy, to which the AIC belongs (see the Public Affairs web site for a list of programs and services.)
