On Friday, February 3, 2012, in the Embassy’s Mbacké auditorium, Ambassador Lewis Lukens spoke with the Association of Online Publishers and Media Professionals about Senegal’s political, economic and social situation.  At the beginning of the meeting, Ambassador Lukens expressed his condolences to the families who lost loved ones during the recent violent protests.  He also condemned all acts of violence during this election period.

" We call on all Senegalese to participate peacefully and actively in the country’s democratic processes.  We condemn any use of violence, and urge all sectors of society to remain peaceful," said Mr. Lukens.  “The United States will continue to support the people of Senegal and will work with government officials and civil society to further consolidate democracy and promote stability and prosperity.   We’ll be watching the upcoming presidential elections with great interest, and we hope that these elections don’t weaken or tarnish the democratic progress which has marked Senegal’s recent history, "he added.

Ambassador Lukens reminded the group that the United States is one of the largest bilateral donors in Senegal.  He mentioned that over the years the American people have invested heavily to help the people of Senegal develop access to health care and education, support sustainable agricultural production, and promote educational and cultural exchanges.

Ambassador Lukens called on the government of Senegal to ensure that the electoral process is free, fair, and transparent, and that the voices of all Senegalese are heard.
